never heard of joe's. i'm quite sure joe's wasn't the only place like that in hawai'i. the informal rule of 'no haole men' could have been a response by guys who constantly faced haole-only rules throughout the islands. even after i graduated from high school 1966, the exclusive elk's club near the kaimana was haoles only. racism rears its head in subtle ways... i.e. requiring dress most locals never had. so race is transformed into class.
