In 1893 (the year Queen Lili’uokalani was illegally deposed by American businessmen), one of the Afong daughters, Henrietta Patrinella Kealaiki, married naval officer William Henry Whiting, a descendant of George Washington and a Civil War hero. The event was termed "the wedding of the year" by the Pacific Commercial Advertiser. The couple spent their first night as husband and wife at the Afong’s Waikiki villa.
