Joe’s restaurant and bar was on what’s now the Hyatt block of Kalakaua. It had a neon sign with the word “Joe’s” written in script which was partly tilted sideways, which I found perplexing as a kid. I’ve never heard the story about haoles being prohibited, but my first impression – which reading Ed Greevy’s story really made me sure of – was that it was not so much that all haole men in general were forbidden, but instead the obnoxious jerk California summer surfers specifically were not allowed in.
