From:
fl morris according
to John Clark in his book Hawai'i Place Names, Shores Beaches and Surf
Sites, this break was first called Ala Moana during the 50's after Ala
Moana Blvd. which runs nearby. "Bowls" was added later in
reference to the bowl section of the wave. The bowl is a surfing term
for when the line of the wave curves in on itself, increasing the energy
and creating a hollow section. In the case of Ala Moana it is very spectacular
and memorable, huge "standup barrels" on big days....... consistently,
like a machine, when it is perfect. |
