Papanui is one of the outermost surf sites in Waikiki. It was named in 1930 by Duke Kahanamoku to honor the big boards that were ridden there. Papanui is in line with Castles but to the west of it and breaks primarily on big south swells from the west. Also known as Bluebirds. Lit., big [surf] board. (from John Clark's Hawai'i Place Names)
