Named for the shallow reef, or "rockpile," in the center of the site that is partially emergent during minus tides. The site on the west side of the rockpile is called Rock Pile Lefts. The site on the east side of the rock pile is called Rock Pile Rights. (from John Clark's Hawai'i Place Names)
